Founders of Reiyukai


Kakutaro Kubo

Kakutaro Kubo, was born on 7th January 1892, in Kominato, Japan. Kubo lived in Tokyo, employed by the Imperial Household Ministry. He worked through the 1920s and 1930s to attract adherents to his vision of a ‘adapting the Lotus Sutra’ and in 1940 officially registered his organization with the City of Tokyo. He worked with Kimi Kotani to further the society until his death on 18th November 1944.

Kimi Kotani

Kimi Kotani was born on 10th January 1901, in Miura, Japan. She married Yasukichi Kotani, the elder brother of Kakutaro Kubo, in 1925. She worked with Kubo to expand Reiyukai, becoming its first President in 1930. After Kubo’s death, she widened the scope of Reiyukai as a social welfare organization and created a multitude of youth programs. She died on 9th February 1971.
